My Dad's Moving Inc. – Frequently Asked Questions

Your Guide to a Stress-Free Move in Morgan Hill, San Jose, and the Bay Area.

Booking & Estimates

How do I get a moving quote? You can get a free estimate by calling us at (408) 529-1302, emailing mdm49jr@gmail.com, or filling out this quote form on our website. For larger homes or complex relocations, we offer free in-home consultations to provide the most accurate pricing.

How is the cost of my move calculated?

  • Local Moves: Typically charged by the hour based on the size of the crew needed. This includes a "double drive time" fee (state law) for the time between our office and your location.

  • Long-Distance Moves: Usually based on the weight of your shipment and the distance to the destination.

  • Fixed/Flat Rates: In some cases, we can provide a flat-rate price for specific jobs or long hauls.

Do you require a deposit? For most local residential moves, we do not require a deposit. We generally only require deposits for very large moves or long-distance hauls.

When is the best time to book my move? We recommend booking 2–4 weeks in advance. Weekends and the end of the month are our busiest times. However, as a family-owned business, we try to accommodate last-minute requests whenever our schedule allows.

What forms of payment do you accept? We accept Cash, Personal/Company Checks, Credit Cards, Venmo, and Zelle. Payment is due upon completion of the move.

Preparation & Packing

Are there items you cannot move? Yes. For safety and liability reasons, we cannot transport:

  • Hazardous Materials: Propane tanks, gasoline, paint, aerosols, matches, fireworks, or chemicals.

  • Perishables: Frozen food or open refrigerated items.

  • Living Things: Pets and plants (plants can struggle with temperature changes in the truck).

Do I need to empty my dresser drawers?

  • Light Clothing: You can generally leave light clothing (socks, t-shirts, underwear) in the drawers.

  • Heavy/Fragile Items: Please remove books, heavy jeans, fragile items, jewelry, and money. Heavy drawers can damage the furniture frame during lifting.

Do you provide packing materials? Yes, we sell high-quality boxes, tape, and packing paper. If you book your move with us, we offer free delivery of these materials to your home. We also bring free wardrobe boxes on the day of the move for your hanging clothes.

How should I label my boxes? Label the top and the side of every box. Include the room it belongs in (e.g., "Master Bedroom") and a brief description of contents. Mark fragile boxes clearly with "FRAGILE" or arrows pointing up.

Do you offer packing services? Yes. We can offer a "Full Pack" (we pack everything), a "Partial Pack" (we pack just the kitchen and breakables), or labor-only packing if you have your own supplies.

Moving Day Logistics

What happens if it rains on moving day? We move rain or shine. Our crews come prepared with shrink wrap, moving blankets, and neoprene floor runners to protect your home and belongings from the elements.

Do I need to be present during the move? Yes, we recommend that you or a trusted representative be present at the beginning of the move to do a walkthrough and at the end to ensure everything is accounted for.

Will the movers disassemble my furniture? Yes. Our crew has the tools to disassemble and reassemble standard furniture like bed frames, dining tables, and sectional sofas.

Do you disconnect appliances? We can move appliances (washers, dryers, fridges), but they must be disconnected from water and gas lines before we arrive. We are not licensed plumbers or electricians, so we cannot disconnect gas lines or hardwired electronics.

Can I ride in the truck with the movers? For insurance and liability reasons, customers are not permitted to ride in the cab of the moving truck.

Do you take a lunch break? On full-day moves, our crew may take a lunch break. If the move is being charged hourly, you are typically not billed for the lunch break time.

Storage & Long-Distance

Do you offer storage? Yes, we offer secure, climate-controlled storage in Morgan Hill. Whether you need to store items for a few days during escrow or for several months, we can handle the transport and storage.

Do you do long-haul moves (out of state)? Yes, My Dad's Moving Inc. services the entire continental USA. Unlike van lines that may mix your goods with others, we often provide dedicated trucks for long-haul moves, ensuring faster delivery times.

Can you load my POD or rental truck? Absolutely. We offer labor-only services where our crew will professionally stack and load your rental truck or storage container to maximize space and safety.

Policies, Protections & Claims

Are you insured? Yes, we are fully licensed, bonded, and insured (Cal-T Permit details available upon request).

What if something gets damaged? We treat your items like our own family heirlooms. However, if damage occurs:

  1. Notify us: Call or email mdm49jr@gmail.com immediately.

  2. Process: Send photos of the damage.

  3. Timeline: Claims must be reported within 48 hours of the move.

What insurance options do I have?

  • Basic Valuation: Included for free (60 cents per pound per article), as required by California law.

  • Full Value Protection: Available for purchase. Ask us for a quote if you have high-value items that require full replacement coverage.

What is your cancellation policy? We do not charge a cancellation fee if you notify us at least 48 hours before your scheduled move.

Should I tip the movers? Tipping is never required but always appreciated for a job well done. If you feel the crew worked hard and protected your home, a standard industry tip is $5–$10 per hour, per mover, or a flat amount (e.g., $40–$100 per mover) depending on the difficulty of the day.

Moving Checklist (Quick Tips)

  • 1 Week Before: Confirm utility shut-off dates.

  • Day Before: Defrost your fridge and clear a path for the movers.

  • Moving Day: Pack an "Essentials Box" (TP, soap, chargers, snacks) to travel in your own car.

  • Valuables: Keep cash, jewelry, and passports with you personally, not in the moving truck.
